Summary of Clinical Issue (200-250 words):

Nurse burnout is an occurrence witnessed in many healthcare settings denoted by a dip in nurses’ motivation and energy that may lead to emotional exhaustion, frustration and a reduction in work output (Mudallal et al., 2017). Nurse burnout has been linked to the worldwide shortage of nurseswhich has further been linked to personal and work conditions such as bad working conditions, unrealistic work expectations and demands, inadequate resources, increased occupational hazards and lack of control of practice. Research into this area has revealed the negative effects of nurse burnout such as a lowering the quality of life, organizational commitment and performance level of nurses. Additionally, nurse burnout also leads to poor patient health outcomes as increases nurses’ turnover (Dall’Ora et al., 2020). Preventing burnout in nurses is therefore a significant factor in promoting the wellbeing of health professionals as well as improving patient outcomes. Multiple studies have been conducted to identify interventions that can reduce nurse burnout. Most studies recommend psychiatric interventions and psychosocial training as interventions to reduce nurse burnout. To this end, a guiding question was designed for the study in order to find out the possible interventions to reduce nurse burnout that were most effective.
Using Evidence Based Practices, the relevant clinical issue was identified and a PICOT question was formed to address the issue, and research was carried out to identify relevant quantitative and qualitative studies.

Population: Clinical Nurses
Intervention: Psychiatric interventions and psychosocial training
Comparison: Nurses with no exposure to the above interventions
Outcome: Reduced burnout
Time: Since 2017

PICOT Question:Do nurses who go through psychological interventions and psychosocial training encounter less burnout in comparison to those who don’t?

How Does the Article Relate to the PICOT Question? The article is concerned with yoga as a psychological intervention to reduce burnout and stress The article involves identifying interventions that can reduce burnout. The article involves identifying factors that may predict burnout.
Quantitative, Qualitative(How do you know?) Quantitative study.Statistical tools were used to measure stress levels at the end of the intervention. Quantitative study. The main data was collected through quantitative questionnaires. Quantitative study. A quantitative survey was the main method used.

Purpose Statement To evaluate the available knowledge regarding employing yoga to reduce burnout. To gauge the experience of nurses who have undergone an intervention to reduce burnout. To make comparisons of the effect of occupational stressors on burnout.
Research Question Do clinicians who practice yoga report reduced levels of burnout? Does the specific intervention achieve acceptable levels. Do different job stressors have different effects on nurse burnout?
Outcome Yoga was effective in reducing stress and burnout. The intervention achieved acceptable levels. A strong relationship was found between occupational stressors and burnout.

Interpersonal relationships and management issues most strongly pre-

dicted participants’ burnout

dicted participants’ burnout

Setting

(Where did the study take place?)

USA and China UK China
Sample Chinese nursing students 81 final year nursing students 602 Chinese nurses
Method Case studies Semi-structured interviews Cross-sectional survey
Key Findings of the Study Yoga reduces stress levels and burnout. The intervention was deemed acceptable and the perception of nurses increased positively with time. Management problems and interpersonal relationships are the best predictors of burnout.

Recommendations of the Researcher Bigger sample size and a better methodological structure Bigger sample size in future research. Include samples from psych wards and general hospitals in future research.

How Does the Article Relate to the PICOT Question? The article is concerned with identifying methods to reduce burnout. The article explores the role of job aspects on burnout.
Quantitative, Qualitative (How do you know?) Qualitative study. This is explicitly mentioned in the methodology. Qualitative study. This is explicitly mentioned in the methodology.
Purpose Statement To clarify and summarize the available evidence on possible burnout-reducing interventions. To analyze the impact of job aspects on nurse burnout on Iranian psych ward nurses.
Research Question Are there any known interventions that can effectively reduce burnout in nurses? What are the occupational aspects that may affect nurse burnout?
Outcome A clarification of the existing evidence used to reduce burnout. Inadequate managerial processes and human resources can result to nurse burnout.

Setting

(Where did the study take place?)

Malaysia, Finland, Iran, Germany, Italy, China and USA. Iran
Sample 22 studies 15 nurses
Method  Meta-analyses and systematic reviews Qualitative interviews
Key Findings of the Study Resilience can be enhanced using positive strategies that lead to reduced burnout. Poorly managed organizational structure increases stress and workload and reduces the quality of service to patients.
Recommendations of the Researcher A bundled plan should be implemented to deal with burnout. To include other clinicians working in psych wards not just the nurses.
