NR443 Week 7: Disaster Preparedness

The poster shows that a lockdown is initiated during a disaster near or on the school campus, teachers and students remain or move to classrooms and stay away from windows and doors until the incident is addressed. A modified lockdown is initiated when danger outside of the building or off-campus, students are urged to remain in class and follow instructions from teachers. Evacuation occurs when a threat such as fire is within the building. Learners are encouraged to leave belongings behind, form a single line while evacuating quietly and assemble at predetermined locations. The message contributes towards lessening the impact of disasters of those within the school setting, prepares the school for the influx of activities and ensures a coordinated plan to reduce wastage of time and efforts.

The poster is for the setting of a school. In case of a disaster, the nurse plays an essential role in the creation of first-aid plans, the initiation of evacuation and performance of triage tasks (National Association of School Nurses, 2014).  The nurse acts as an effective communicator and educator, in particular by sharing risk information and connecting learners and families with providers who can provide immediate crisis treatment and support and referral to appropriate long-term mental health services.

Disasters usually result in minor damage, and worse circumstances lead to loss of life. A community health nurse can work with teachers in a school setting to ease the situation. The cooperation between the CHN and the teachers is essential as it optimizes successful outcomes in all phases of crisis management, as the nurse provides a specific and vital perspective for assessing the situation and taking appropriate action.
